Armistice day / Remembrance Day
A Memorial Day to mark the end of the First World War. A national day is observed in commonwealth countries on 11th November each year and has a tradition of wearing a red poppy. 11 signifies the formal ending of hostilities “at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month “ in 1919 when Germany and the allies signed the armistice. Although this only stopped the fighting and the first world war was finally ended on 28th June 1919 with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles.
Poppies are used as a sign of remembrance for those who lost their lives in battle as they were the flowers which grew on the battlefields once the fighting had ended.
